Logan Heights is a lively urban neighborhood in central San Diego, California. It is surrounded by major highways like Interstate 5 and Interstate 15. This area is part of the larger Southeastern Planning Area of San Diego.

History of Logan Heights

In 1871, a Congressman named John A. Logan helped create a law. This law offered federal land and money for a transcontinental railroad that would end in San Diego. A street was named Logan Heights after him in 1881. Soon, the entire area became known by this name.

The railroad plans never fully happened. By the early 1900s, Logan Heights was mostly a place where people lived. It became one of San Diego's oldest communities. Around 1910, many people moved here from Mexico. They were seeking safety from the Mexican Revolution. These new residents soon became the main group living in the area. Because of this, the southern part of Logan Heights became known as Barrio Logan.

Who Lives in Logan Heights?

Logan Heights is known for having one of the largest groups of Latino people in San Diego. Most residents are of Hispanic or Latino heritage, making up about 87.6% of the population. African-Americans make up 7.1%, while non-Hispanic Whites are 3.7%. About 1.4% of residents are Asian, and 0.1% are from other backgrounds.
