What's in a Name?
The official name of the town in the Basque language (Euskera) is Loiu. In Spanish, the town is called Lujua.
The town's old name was Luxua. Over time, the way people said certain sounds changed. This happened around the 17th century. The sound of 'x' changed to 'j' in Spanish. This is how Luxua became Lujua.
In Basque, the name changed differently. The 'x' sound evolved into a 'y' sound. Also, the stress on the syllables changed. This led to the name becoming Loiu. The Euskaltzaindia, which is the official academy for the Basque language, decided that Loiu would be the official name. Loiu officially adopted this name in 1983.
