History of Long Creek Village
Long Creek gets its name from a stream that flows through the area.
Early Settlers and Native Americans
The first people to settle here arrived in 1828. They came from North Carolina. These early settlers built log cabins and started to improve the land around them.
In the fall of 1828, a group of Native Americans from the Kickapoo Tribe of Oklahoma came to the area. They set up their camp along Long Creek. They tried to hunt, trap, and fish. However, they didn't have much luck finding game. Because of this, they started taking hogs and poultry from the settlers. Eventually, the Native Americans moved on to other areas.
Growth and Community Buildings
More settlers arrived in the early 1830s. The community began to grow. The first schoolhouse was built in 1834. This building was important because it was also used as a place for people to worship. Later, the first church was built in 1842.

Long Creek is located in the eastern part of Macon County. Its exact location is 39°48′32″N 88°51′24″W / 39.80889°N 88.85667°W.
Location and Nearby Towns
The village is next to the city of Decatur to the northwest. Decatur is the main city in the county. To the southwest, Long Creek borders the village of Mount Zion.
U.S. Route 36 runs along the northern edge of Long Creek. This highway goes northwest about 6 miles (10 km) to the center of Decatur. It also goes east about 31 miles (50 km) to Tuscola.
Land and Water Features
The village of Long Creek covers an area of about 2.83 square miles (7.32 square kilometers). All of this area is land. The stream called Long Creek flows through the middle of the village. It runs west and connects to Finley Creek. Finley Creek is part of the southeast arm of Lake Decatur. Lake Decatur is a large reservoir on the Sangamon River.
