Long Gone Gulch is an American 2D animated web series. It mixes adventure, fantasy, Western, and comedy styles. The show was created, directed, written, and produced by Tara Billinger and Zach Bellissimo.

Tara Billinger worked on The Wonderful World of Mickey Mouse shorts. Zach Bellissimo worked on Victor & Valentino and Rick & Morty. The idea for the show started with a successful Kickstarter campaign in 2016. The first episode, called the pilot, came out on January 11, 2021. It was released on YouTube, which was different from many other shows in 2021. The pilot episode includes a warning about cartoon violence, flashing images, and "scary content."

What is Long Gone Gulch About?

The story of Long Gone Gulch follows two sheriffs named Snag and Rawhide. They live in a place called "The Gulch." After a job goes wrong, they get into trouble with the town's mayor.

They must fight for what they care about most. Along the way, they meet many strange and tricky characters.

Meet the Characters

The Gulch is full of unique characters. Here are some of the main ones:

Main Characters

  • Rawhide (voiced by E. G. Daily) is a 16-year-old human sheriff. She is Snag's friend and works for the mayor. Rawhide is great at fighting, especially with her slingshot. She can also think quickly to solve problems. Her dad passed away and is buried near town. Rawhide loves collecting things, sweets, and history. She dislikes liars, bad guys, and pests.
  • Snag (voiced by Danny Cooksey) is another human sheriff and Rawhide's friend. He is 17 years old. Snag uses a special comb as his weapon. He enjoys rock n' roll music, seeking thrills, and watching monster movies. He doesn't like books, hard work, or rules.
  • Mayor Rhubarb (voiced by Myke Chilian) is the mayor of The Gulch. He is a jackalope and quite old. He hired Rawhide and Snag as sheriffs but often gets annoyed by them. He can be very nervous and short-tempered.

Supporting Characters

  • Squatch and Pinchley (voiced by Piotr Michael) are good friends of Rawhide and Snag. Squatch is a tired-looking sasquatch. Pinchley is a happy and not-so-smart humanoid cactus. Both of them hang out at the local saloon.
  • Mako (voiced by Eric Bauza) is an outlaw in the Gulch. He is a land-walking shark, likely a mako shark. Mako does not like the sheriffs. He has four henchmen who are also land-walking sea creatures: Frisco the wolffish, Enzo the pink crab, Groggy the green crab, and Klaus the moray eel.
  • Marigold (voiced by Erin Fitzgerald) is the mayor's secretary. She is also a jackalope. Marigold is Mayor Rhubarb's love interest. She was briefly convinced to join Mako's gang when they offered her "cheaper healthcare."

How Long Gone Gulch Was Made

The creators started working on the idea for Long Gone Gulch around 2010. The project was first shared online in 2015. In 2016, a Kickstarter campaign began to raise money for the series. This fundraising continued for five years.

A one-minute trailer was released in 2016. Tara Billinger and Zach Bellissimo shared the work for the art, character design, storyboarding, and animation. Other artists helped with extra animation and logo design. The goal was to make an 8–11 minute pilot episode. They wanted a Western show that was not a parody.

In June 2018, the show's official Tumblr page said that programs like Flash CC and Animate were used for the animation. The creators were making the show on their own, without a big studio. The pilot was first expected in early 2019, but the release date was moved to 2020.

The official trailer for the series came out on YouTube on November 27, 2018. The pilot episode was finally released on January 11, 2021. It ended up being over 21 minutes long, much longer than first planned. Many talented people worked on the show. This included animators, art directors, writers, and others.

In June 2021, the band J.D. Wilkes & the Legendary Shack Shakers released a new song called "Rawhide." Its music video included animated scenes from the pilot. The band's lead singer, J.D. Wilkes, also performed a song called "Bible, Candle, & A Skull" in the pilot episode.
