The Long Marsh Run Rural Historic District is a special area near Berryville, Virginia. It is a historic district in Clarke County, Virginia. This district covers a large area of about 10,293 acres.

It includes many old buildings, sites, and structures. These show what life was like in the past. You can find large estates from before and after the American Civil War. There are also smaller farms, churches, and schools from the 1800s. Some African-American communities are also part of this historic area.

The Long Marsh Run Rural Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1996. This means it is a place important to the history of the United States.

What is the Long Marsh Run Historic District?

This historic district is full of interesting old places. Most of the buildings are farmhouses and their smaller buildings. There are about 60 such groups of buildings.

Other important buildings include four schools and four churches. You can also find two old mills and two mill sites. There is even an old post office. Three small African-American communities are also part of the district. Some still have their original schools and churches.

The district also has 35 historic structures. Many of these are corncribs, which stored corn. There are also six metal windmills. The 16 historic sites are mostly old cemeteries and the remains of old buildings.

Fairfield: An Old Plantation Home

Fairfield is a very old and important house in the district. It is a plantation house built around 1770. It is made of local limestone. Fairfield is the oldest building in the entire district.

This house was once home to Warner Washington. He was a first-cousin of George Washington, America's first president. Fairfield shows how large plantations from the Tidewater area of Virginia were brought to the Shenandoah Valley.

The LaRue Family and Their Homes

The district is named after Long Marsh Run, a creek. The LaRue family first settled here in the 1740s. Today, four homes built by the LaRue family are still standing.

Bloomfield: The Oldest LaRue Home

Bloomfield was built by Jacob LaRue in 1775. It is a two-story house made of limestone. The stones are laid in even rows. Bloomfield is the oldest LaRue home still standing. It is two rooms deep.

Claremont and Villa LaRue

Jacob's father, Isaac LaRue, built his home, Claremont, in 1778. It is a short distance from Bloomfield. Claremont is also a two-story house made of limestone. It looks very similar to Bloomfield. It might have replaced Isaac's first log cabin from the 1740s.

Jabez LaRue built his home, Villa LaRue, in the 1790s. It is a few miles east of Bloomfield and Claremont. Villa LaRue is special because its front is made of limestone laid in even rows. But its sides and back are made of stones of different shapes and sizes. This house has a hallway on one side.

Longmarsh: Another LaRue Home

Just south of Villa LaRue is Longmarsh. It was also built of stone around the same time. The original part of this house is small. It was supposedly an overseer's house for Villa LaRue.
