Lonquimay is a town and a type of local government area called a commune in southern Chile. It is located in the Malleco Province, which is part of the Araucanía Region.

Getting Around Lonquimay

Lonquimay was once planned to be the end point of a big railway project. This railway was meant to go through the Andes mountains all the way to Argentina. Even though the project was stopped, people thought it was the best way to build a railway across the Andes.

In 2005, there were talks about starting the project again. The railway line in Chile includes the country's longest tunnel, which is about 4,563 meters (14,970 feet) long.

Lonquimay's Population

According to a census taken in 2002, Lonquimay covers an area of about 3,914 square kilometers (1,511 square miles). At that time, it had 10,237 people living there. More men lived in Lonquimay (5,414) than women (4,823).

About one-third of the people (3,435) lived in urban areas, which are like towns or cities. The other two-thirds (6,802) lived in rural areas, which are more like the countryside. Between 1992 and 2002, the population of Lonquimay grew by 12.5%.

How Lonquimay is Governed

As a commune, Lonquimay is a local government area in Chile. It is managed by a municipal council. The head of this council is an alcalde, who is like a mayor. The alcalde is chosen directly by the people every four years.

From 2008 to 2012, the alcalde of Lonquimay was Guillermo Vásquez Veroiza. He belonged to a political group called the PPD.

Lonquimay's Geography and Climate

Lonquimay is located in the Andes mountains, about 900 meters (2,953 feet) above sea level. It has a mild oceanic climate, which means it gets a lot of rain. On average, it rains about 1,990 millimeters (78 inches) each year.

Weather in Lonquimay

Summers in Lonquimay have warm days, but the nights can be quite cool. Winters are cold and very wet, with lots of snow. This snowy weather makes Lonquimay a great place for winter sports. At the base of the Lonquimay volcano, you can find The Corralco Mountain and Ski Resort, which is popular for skiing and snowboarding.
