Lookout is a small community in Modoc County, California. It used to be called Whitley's Ford. Lookout is about 11 miles (18 km) west of Adin. It sits at an elevation of 4,144 feet (1,263 meters) above sea level.

History of Lookout's Name
The first post office in the area was called Whitley's Ford. It operated from 1874 to 1875. This name honored James W. Whitley, who owned a hotel nearby.
The post office changed its name to Lookout in 1880. The name "Lookout" comes from how Native Americans used the nearby hills. They used these spots as high observation points to look out over the land.
Geography and Area
Lookout is a census-designated place (CDP). This means it's a community that the United States Census Bureau defines for statistics. It's not an officially incorporated town.
The area of Lookout covers about 5.5 square miles (14.1 square kilometers). Most of this area, about 97.83%, is land. The remaining 2.17% is water.
Climate and Weather
Lookout experiences a type of weather known as a warm-summer Mediterranean climate. This is sometimes called "Csb" on climate maps.
