About Lookout Rancheria
A ranchería is a small piece of land set aside for Native American tribes. The Lookout Rancheria was created in 1913. It covers about 40 acres (160,000 m2) of land. This is roughly the size of 30 football fields.
Where is Lookout Rancheria?
This special land is located in northeastern California. It is next to the Shasta National Forest. You can find it about halfway between the towns of Burney and Alturas. The ranchería is also about four miles (6 km) east of a small community called Lookout. This area is in the southwestern part of Modoc County.
Who Lives at Lookout Rancheria?
The Lookout Rancheria is home to members of the Pit River Tribe. While the larger Pit River Tribe has about 1800 members, only a small number, around 10 people, live directly on this specific ranchería. The people living here speak English. They also follow different spiritual paths, including traditional tribal religions and Christianity.
