Lopez Lake: A Key Water Source
Lopez Lake was formed by the Lopez Dam on Arroyo Grande Creek. The dam was built in 1969. It helps control floods and provides water for farms to grow crops. The dam was made stronger between 2001 and 2003 to protect it from earthquakes. The lake can hold a huge amount of water, about 49,200 acre⋅ft (60,700,000 m3).
Water for Nearby Towns
Lopez Lake provides drinking water for several communities. These include Arroyo Grande, Grover Beach, Pismo Beach, Oceano, and Avila Beach. The lake also helps refill underground water supplies.
Unlike many places that get their drinking water from lakes, people are allowed to touch the water in Lopez Lake. To make sure the drinking water is safe, it goes through a special cleaning process. Water from the lake travels about 3 mi (4.8 km) to a different reservoir. Here, tiny particles settle down and harmful germs die off. After that, the water is cleaned even more at the Lopez Water Treatment Plant. It goes through steps like flocculation, filtration, and chlorination to make it perfectly safe to drink.
