The Lord Saltoun is a special title in the Peerage of Scotland. A "peerage" is a system of titles for important families, like dukes, marquesses, earls, viscounts, and barons. The Lord Saltoun is a type of baron.
This title was first created in 1445 for Sir Lawrence Abernethy by King James II. The title stayed with the Abernethy family for many years.
In 1669, the tenth Lady Saltoun, Margaret Abernethy, passed away. After her, the title went to her cousin, Alexander Fraser. Since then, the title has been held by the Fraser family.
Some Lords Saltoun have been very important. For example, the seventeenth Lord was a high-ranking officer in the Army. He also served in the House of Lords as a Scottish Representative Peer. This meant he was chosen to represent Scotland's nobility in the British Parliament.
Later Lords Saltoun, including the eighteenth, nineteenth, and twentieth Lords, also served as Scottish Representative Peers. Since 1979, the title has been held by Flora Fraser, 21st Lady Saltoun, who is the 21st Lady Saltoun. She is the head of the Frasers of Philorth family. She was also one of the special hereditary peers who remained in the House of Lords after a big change in 1999. She retired from her seat in 2014.
In the 1900s, people discovered that Margaret Abernethy (the 10th Lady Saltoun) should have been counted in the list of title holders. She inherited the title in 1668 but only held it for about 10 weeks. Because of this, the numbers for all the Lords Saltoun after her had to be changed. So, you might sometimes see older books or records that use the "traditional" (older) numbering.
The main homes of the Fraser family are Inverey House, which is near Braemar in Aberdeenshire, and Cairnbulg Castle, near Fraserburgh, also in Aberdeenshire.
