Lordswood is a district found in Hampshire, England. It is located in the northern part of Southampton. Lordswood shares its borders with areas like Lordshill, Chilworth, Aldermoor, and Bassett.

History of Lordswood

Lordswood has a long history. Around the year 956, an important document called the Anglo-Saxon Charter mentioned this area. Back then, Lordswood, along with Aldermoor, Lordshill, and Coxford, was part of a large farming estate. This estate was known as the Manor of Millbrook.

For many centuries, Lordswood was mostly farmland within the county of Hampshire. However, in the 1900s, the growing city of Southampton expanded. Lordswood then became a part of Southampton.

Landscape and Nature

A key feature of Lordswood is its gentle valley. This valley was formed by a small stream called Holly Brook. The area is also quite high up compared to sea level. At the top of Hollybrook Cemetery, the ground reaches about 45 meters (148 feet) high.

Homes in Lordswood

Most of the homes in Lordswood are large, detached houses. These are usually owned by the people who live in them. You can see examples of these homes along Bassett Avenue. There is also a smaller area with newer apartment buildings. These flats are located near Dunkirk Road.

Getting Around Lordswood

Several important roads help people travel through Lordswood. The A35 Winchester Road is a main road that forms part of the Southampton Ring Road. This road is in the south-east corner of the district.

Lordswood Road is another key route. It allows people to travel from the northern suburbs towards the west. Lord's Hill Way is a special road built in the 1970s. It helps distribute traffic for the Lord's Hill housing estate.
