Early Life and Education
Lorenzo Arrazola was born in Checa, a small town in the Guadalajara region. With help from his mother's brother, who was a mayor, he was able to attend a seminary. There, he completed his early studies.
He earned degrees in theology and philosophy. During this time, he became very good at speaking Latin. When he was 26, Arrazola decided to leave the seminary to join the military, even though his uncle did not want him to.
Studying Law
Later, he went to Valladolid to study civil law. He became a professor in the philosophy department at the university there. Eventually, he became the rector, or head, of the university. After that, Arrazola spent ten years as a faculty member at Complutense University.
In 1829, he married Ana Micaela Guerrera. She was from a town called Villanueva de Campeán.
Starting a Political Career
Arrazola began his political journey in 1835, when he was 38 years old. He aimed to be elected as an attorney. In 1837, he was chosen as a deputy for the courts in Valladolid. This meant he left his work in law and teaching behind. He joined the Moderate Party and the Ateneo de Madrid, which helped shape his political beliefs.
Important Roles in Government
In 1837, Lorenzo Arrazola entered his first election. He became a member of Spain's Congress of Deputies. He held this position until February 1841. In December 1838, he began his first of six terms as Minister of Grace and Justice. This role involved overseeing the justice system.
Becoming a Senator
Queen Isabella II was very grateful to Arrazola for creating a new Criminal Code. Because of this, she made him a senator-for-life on December 23, 1848. This meant he would serve as a senator for the rest of his life.
Leading the Supreme Court
He also served as the 4th Attorney General of Spain for a short time in 1847. He was confirmed as President of the Supreme Court in 1851. He held this important position until 1853. He then served as President of the Supreme Court again from 1856 to 1864.
Between 1864 and 1867, he was both the Minister of Justice and the Minister of Interior temporarily.
