Lori is a beautiful region, also called a province, in the northern part of Armenia. It shares a border with the country of Georgia. The biggest city and capital of Lori is Vanadzor. Stepanavan is another important city in the province.
Lori is home to some amazing historical places. These include the UNESCO World Heritage Sites of Haghpat and Sanahin monasteries. You can also find the well-preserved Akhtala monastery here.
Sadly, Lori was affected by a big natural disaster. This was the 1988 Spitak earthquake.
Many famous Armenians were born in Lori. These include the musician Sayat-Nova and the poet Hovhannes Tumanyan. Also, Soviet aircraft designer Artem Mikoyan and statesman Anastas Mikoyan came from Lori.
Lori is made up of different types of communities. There are 8 urban communities, which are like cities or towns. There are also 105 rural communities, which are smaller villages.

About Lori Province
Lori is one of the ten provinces of Armenia. It is located in the northern part of the country. The province covers a total area of 3,789 square kilometers. This makes it the third largest province in Armenia.
Geography and Nature
Lori is known for its beautiful mountains and deep river valleys. The Pambak mountains are a big part of its landscape. The Dzoraget River flows through the province. This creates stunning natural views.
The province has a varied climate. This means it has different weather patterns throughout the year. It can be cold in winter and warm in summer.
Important Cities
Vanadzor is the capital city of Lori. It is the third largest city in all of Armenia. Vanadzor is an important center for industry and education in the region.
Stepanavan is the second largest city in Lori. It is also a popular place for tourists. The city is known for its fresh air and green surroundings.
Historical and Cultural Sites
Lori is rich in history and culture. It has many ancient monasteries and churches. These buildings show the long history of Armenian architecture.
UNESCO World Heritage Sites
The Haghpat Monastery and Sanahin Monastery are very special. They are both recognized as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. This means they are important to the whole world. These monasteries were built a long time ago, in the 10th century. They are famous for their unique Armenian architecture.
Other Monasteries and Churches
The Akhtala monastery is another amazing site. It is known for its beautiful frescoes, which are paintings on walls. The Saint Gregory Church of Dsegh is from the 7th century. It is one of the oldest churches in the region.
There is also the Saint Nikolai the Wonderworker church in Amrakits. This Russian church was built in 1848. In Vanadzor, you can find the Russian church. These show the different cultures that have influenced Lori.
Famous People from Lori
Lori has given birth to many talented individuals.
- Sayat-Nova (1712–1795) was a famous Armenian poet and musician. He is known for his beautiful songs and poems.
- Hovhannes Tumanyan (1869–1923) was a beloved Armenian poet and writer. He wrote many fairy tales and poems for children.
- Artem Mikoyan (1905–1970) was a Soviet aircraft designer. He helped create many famous airplanes.
- Anastas Mikoyan (1895–1978) was a well-known Soviet statesman. He played an important role in the government.
Education and Development
Lori has several educational institutions. Vanadzor State University is a major university in the capital. There is also the COAF SMART Center in Debed. This center helps young people learn new skills.
