History of Los Llanos
Los Llanos has an interesting history, just like many places in Puerto Rico. It became part of the United States a long time ago.
Puerto Rico Becomes a U.S. Territory
After the Spanish–American War ended in 1898, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This was part of a deal called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Because of this treaty, Puerto Rico became an unincorporated territory of the United States. This means it is part of the U.S. but is not a state.
Early Population Count
Soon after, in 1899, the United States government wanted to count all the people living in Puerto Rico. This count is called a census. The census found that 1,064 people lived in the Los Llanos barrio at that time.
