The Lost River Reservation, also known as the Lost River Gorge & Boulder Caves, is a special natural area in Woodstock, New Hampshire, United States. It protects a series of amazing caves found within a deep gorge. This beautiful spot is located in the White Mountains, about 5 miles west of North Woodstock.

The reservation sits in a place called Kinsman Notch. This notch is a major mountain pass in the White Mountains. It is nestled between Mount Moosilauke and Kinsman Ridge, nearly 2,000 feet above sea level.

Exploring the Lost River Gorge

The name "Lost River" comes from a brook that seems to disappear! This brook flows through the southern part of Kinsman Notch. It goes underground into a narrow, steep gorge that was carved by glaciers long ago.

The Hidden Waterway

The gorge is filled with huge granite rocks. The brook flows through the spaces and cracks between these giant boulders. It creates a series of underground waterfalls and cascades. Eventually, the water reappears and joins the Pemigewasset River, which flows south from Franconia Notch.

Protecting Nature

The Lost River Reservation covers about 157 acres of land around this unique gorge. It is owned and cared for by the Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests. This group works to keep the area safe and natural for everyone to enjoy.

Visiting the Gorge and Caves

There is a fee to enter the main gorge area. Once inside, you can explore a 3/4-mile-long boardwalk that winds along the gorge. You will find stairs leading down into the gorge. Many of the caves are open for visitors to walk or crawl through, offering a fun adventure!

Free Trails for Hikers

Besides the main gorge area, the Forest Society also maintains two free hiking trails. These trails are separate from the part of the gorge that charges an admission fee. They offer more ways to experience the natural beauty of the Lost River Reservation.
