Lotfollah Safi Golpaygani (Persian: لطفالله صافی گلپایگانی; born February 20, 1919 – died February 1, 2022) was an important Iranian religious leader. He was known as a Grand Ayatollah, which is a very high rank in Twelver Shia Islam. For a time, he was the most senior scholar (Marja') in Iran. He lived in Qom, a city in Iran, where he taught Islamic studies at the Qom Seminary.

His Early Life and Family
Lotfollah Safi Golpaygani was born in Golpayegan, Iran, on February 20, 1919. He came from a family deeply involved in religious studies. His father, Mohammad Javad Safi Golpaygani, was also a high-ranking Shia scholar. His mother, Fatemeh Khanom, was the daughter of another respected scholar. His brother, Ali Safi Golpaygani, also became a well-known Shia scholar. Lotfollah Safi Golpaygani was also related by marriage to other important religious figures.
His Education and Learning
From a young age, Lotfollah began studying Islamic texts in his hometown. His father taught him many subjects, including Islamic beliefs, Quran interpretation, Hadith (sayings of the Prophet), and Islamic law.
In 1941, when he was 22, he moved to Qom to continue his studies at the Qom Seminary. He also spent about a year studying in Najaf, another important center for Islamic learning. After returning to Qom, he spent 15 more years learning from many top Shia scholars. He also took part in discussions about Islamic Mysticism.

Lotfollah Safi Golpaygani learned from several highly respected scholars. These included Hossein Borujerdi, Seyyed Mohammad Hojjat Kooh Kamari, Sadr al-Din al-Sadr, and Mohammad-Reza Golpaygani.

His Political Actions
Before the 1979 Iranian revolution, Lotfollah Safi Golpaygani openly criticized the then-ruler of Iran, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, known as the Shah. Because of his criticisms, some of his writings were banned in Iran.
After the revolution, he was chosen by the people of Markazi province to be their representative. He served in the group that reviewed the country's new constitution. Ruhollah Khomeini, a key leader of the revolution, also appointed him as the secretary of the Guardian Council. This council plays an important role in checking laws in Iran.
His Writings
Throughout his life, Lotfollah Safi Golpaygani wrote more than 100 books and articles. He wrote in both Persian and Arabic. Some of his notable works include:

Lotfollah Safi Golpaygani's Opinions
His Views on Islamic Mysticism
Safi Golpaygani was known for not agreeing with Islamic Mysticism. He believed that some ideas in Islamic Mysticism were not practical or real. He thought that focusing on such things might be a waste of time.
His Thoughts on Poverty
Lotfollah Safi Golpaygani often spoke about the problem of poverty in Iran. He believed that a fair Islamic system should work to end poverty for everyone.
His Call for Global Friendship
In October 2021, he met with Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, a political figure. During this meeting, Lotfollah Safi Golpaygani stressed that Iran should try to have good relationships with all countries around the world. He was also very concerned about the economic challenges people in Iran were facing.
His Message About Afghanistan
When the Taliban took control of Afghanistan in August 2021, many Shia people in Afghanistan were worried about their safety. Lotfollah Safi Golpaygani sent a message asking the world to help the people of Afghanistan during this difficult time.
His Passing Away
Lotfollah Safi Golpaygani passed away in a hospital in Qom on February 1, 2022. He was 102 years old and died from a heart attack. Many Shia Muslims around the world were saddened by his death. Important leaders like Ali Khamenei, Ali al-Sistani, and Hossein Wahid Khorasani sent messages of sympathy.
His funeral was held on February 2 in Qom, and many people attended. His son-in-law, Ali Karimi Jahromi, led the funeral prayers. Following his wishes, his body was moved to Karbala and buried in the Imam Husayn Shrine on February 3.
