Exploring the Lough Derg Way
The Lough Derg Way is officially known as a National Waymarked Trail. This means it's a special path marked with signs to help walkers find their way easily. The National Trails Office of the Irish Sports Council has given it this important designation.
Who Looks After the Trail?
Many groups work together to keep the Lough Derg Way in great condition. These include Shannon Development, Tipperary County Council, and the Tipperary Integrated Development Company. Their teamwork helps make sure the trail is safe and enjoyable for everyone.
Improvements to the Path
In 2011, the Lough Derg Way got a big upgrade! It was re-designed and re-opened with many parts moved off busy roads. This made the trail much nicer for walkers. An investment of €115,000 helped with these improvements. This money came from the Comhairle na Tuaithe Walks Scheme, which supports landowners. They help maintain the parts of the trail that cross their land.
What You'll See Along the Way
The trail mostly follows the beautiful River Shannon and its connected canals. It starts in Limerick City and leads all the way to Dromineer, which is right on the banks of Lough Derg. As you walk, you'll pass through charming towns and villages. These include Clonlara, O'Brien's Bridge, Killaloe, Ballina, and Garrykennedy.
