Dromineer Castle: A Look Back in Time

The ruined castle in Dromineer started as a two-story hall house in the 1200s. It was built by followers of Thomas Butler. Later, in the 1400s or 1500s, it was changed into a taller tower house. Two more stories were added, and the ground floor was made stronger with vaults.

The Cantwell family lived in the castle by 1299. Later, the O’Kennedy family took over and made more changes to turn it into a tower house. In 1582, the Butler Earls of Ormond took the castle back. The Cantwells then returned as tenants until about 1640.

In 1650, soldiers from Oliver Cromwell's army took control of the castle. They used it as a base. After Cromwell's time, it was given back to the Earl of Ormond. The castle was lived in until 1688. It became a ruin in the late 1600s and was sold in the late 1800s.

Dromineer Church: An Ancient Place of Worship

The church in Dromineer might have been built as early as the 900s. People say that monks from Holy Island built it. The church is part of a larger parish that includes many townlands. This area has several old Christian sites.

The church was built using very large stone blocks. It was made bigger in the 1100s in a style called Celtic Romanesque. In the 1830s, the west doorway was still standing. It had carvings, including dogs' heads with big eyes. The church is in a graveyard next to the local pub.
