About Jean Louis Tocqué

Jean Louis Tocqué was born in Paris, France, on November 19, 1696. His father was also a painter, but he passed away when Louis was very young, before he turned fourteen. After this, another artist named Jean-Marc Nattier took care of him.

Tocqué learned a lot about painting from Nattier. He also studied with other famous artists like Nicolas Bertin and Hyacinthe Rigaud in the 1720s. In 1747, he married Marie Nattier, who was Jean-Marc Nattier's daughter. Jean Louis Tocqué died in Paris on February 10, 1772.

Tocqué's Painting Career

Tocqué started his painting journey as an apprentice, learning from Jean-Marc Nattier. He was also inspired by his teachers, especially Hyacinthe Rigaud, and another French painter named Nicolas de Largillierre.

One of his first important works was a portrait of Louis XV of France, who was the King of France. In 1740, he painted a portrait of Marie Leszczyńska, who was the Queen of France.

From 1737 to 1759, more than fifty of Tocqué's portraits were shown at the Salon in Paris. The Salon was a very important official art exhibition held by the Académie des Beaux-Arts, which was a famous art academy in Paris.

In 1745, he painted a portrait of Infanta Maria Teresa Rafaela of Spain. In 1757, he traveled to the Russian Empire. He was invited by Elizaveta Petrovna, who was the Empress of Russia, to paint her official portrait. This special painting can still be seen today at the Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg, Russia.

In the 1760s, Tocqué visited Denmark. There, he painted portraits of the Danish royal family. He also taught art at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen.
