Discovering the Kings' Story
How the Kings Began
The Louisville Kings team was officially created on October 7, 2025. The team's name and its mascot, Derby, were inspired by Kentucky's rich history of thoroughbred racing, especially the famous Kentucky Derby. One of the team's co-owners, Mike Repole, had a lot of experience with horse racing in Kentucky.
He wanted a name that connected to horses but found many names like "Stallions" and "Colts" were already taken by other teams. So, he thought about how horse racing is often called the "sport of kings." This idea led to the team being named the Kings! The mayor of Louisville, Craig Greenberg, also liked the name because the city itself is named after a French king, Louis XVI.
Their Home Stadium
The Kings play at Lynn Family Stadium. It is the smallest stadium in the UFL, which means it has a cozy and exciting feel for fans. Most other UFL stadiums can hold at least 20,000 people. Mike Repole specifically chose Lynn Family Stadium because he wanted a more personal atmosphere for the games. He felt it was important for the team to have a close connection with its fans.
Welcoming a Community Ambassador
Eric Wood, a former football player for the Buffalo Bills, became the team's first community ambassador. An ambassador helps connect the team with the local community. They work to build strong relationships between the team and its fans, and often get involved in local events.
Louisville's Love for Sports
A Unique Football Team in Kentucky
The Louisville Kings are special because they are the only professional outdoor football team in all of Kentucky. Before the Kings, the last professional outdoor team in Louisville was the Kentucky Trackers in 1980. Louisville is a city that loves sports! It is home to other professional teams like the Louisville Bats (baseball), Louisville City FC (men's soccer), and Racing Louisville FC (women's soccer).
College Sports Influence
Even though the Kings are a professional team, many people in Kentucky also cheer for college teams. The teams from the University of Kentucky and the University of Louisville are very popular and have a big influence on the local sports scene.
Growing Fan Base
The Kings quickly became very popular. They had the highest demand for tickets among the new teams that joined the UFL for the 2026 season. Soon after the team was announced, a dedicated fan group called the "Kings' Court" was formed. This shows how excited people in Louisville are about their new football team!
