Loukas Kanakaris-Roufos (Greek: Λουκάς Κανακάρης-Ρούφος, born August 23, 1878 – died November 11, 1949) was an important Greek politician. He came from a well-known family called the Rouphos family. His father was Athanasios Kanakaris-Roufos.

Who Was Loukas Kanakaris-Roufos?

Loukas Kanakaris-Roufos spent many years serving his country. He held various important jobs in the Greek government. He was a Member of Parliament (MP), a Governor-General, and even a Minister several times.

Early Steps in Politics

Loukas began his political journey in 1905. He was elected as a Member of the Greek Parliament. This meant he helped make laws and decisions for Greece. After a short break, he returned to Parliament in 1908. He took over the seat that belonged to his brother, Ioannis Roufos, who had passed away.

Leading Roles and Challenges

In 1913, Loukas took on a new big role. He became the Governor-General of Crete. This was a very important job because Crete was officially joining Greece at that time. He stayed in this position until 1915.

Soon after, he was elected to Parliament again in 1915. In 1916, he became the Minister for the Interior. This role meant he was in charge of things like public safety and local government.

During a difficult time in Greek history, known as the National Schism, Loukas faced a tough choice. Even though he was friends with Eleftherios Venizelos, a powerful leader, he chose to support King Constantine I. Because of this, when Venizelos's side won, Loukas was held in prison until 1920.

Return to Government

After his release, Loukas was re-elected to Parliament in 1920. In 1922, he served twice as the Minister for National Economy. This job involved managing Greece's money and businesses. During this time, he also led the Greek team in talks in Genoa. These talks aimed to find a solution to the war between Greece and Turkey.

In 1925, he was appointed Minister for National Education and Religious Affairs. Later that year, he became the Foreign Minister. This meant he represented Greece in dealings with other countries.

Loukas continued to be involved in politics, being elected to Parliament again in 1936. This was just before a period of dictatorship and World War II. He passed away in Athens in 1949.
