Several important buildings in Lowell are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. These include the James Brannon House, the Melvin A. Halsted House, and the Charles E. Nichols House. The Lowell Commercial Historic District and the J. Claude Rumsey House are also recognized for their historical value.
Geography and Landscape
Lowell covers an area of about 5.27 square miles (13.65 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, with a small part being water.
Water Supply Challenges
Lowell is located about five miles (8 kilometers) away from the Great Lakes Basin. Because of this, the town once tried to get permission to bring water from the Great Lakes. They wanted to replace their city water, which came from deep wells and had high levels of fluoride. However, moving water out of the Great Lakes requires approval from the Great Lakes Commission. This group includes representatives from all the U.S. states and Canadian provinces that share the lakes. Lowell's request was turned down in 1991.
Natural Landforms
Lowell sits on a natural landform called the Valparaiso Moraine. This is a ridge of hills formed by glaciers long ago. It is also very close to the Kankakee Outwash Plain, which is a flat area created by water flowing from melting glaciers. The town is also near the St. Lawrence Seaway Divide, which is a high point where water flows in different directions.
Lowell's Climate
Lowell has a Humid continental climate. This means it experiences four clear seasons: a warm summer, a cold winter, and mild spring and autumn seasons.
