A Look at Lowell's Past
Lowell became an official city in 1879. It was named after Lowell, Massachusetts, a city known for its textile factories. People hoped Lowell, North Carolina, would also become a big textile center.
The area was first settled around 1848. That's when the Woodlawn Mill was built on the South Fork Catawba River. In 1870, a railway called the Atlanta and Richmond Air-Line Railway was being built. A small train station was put in the community. It was called "Wright's Station" because William Wright lived nearby.
