History of Loxley
Early Beginnings in the 1800s
In 1870, a man named John Loxley from Chicago started a lumber camp in an area once known as Bennet. A lumber camp is a place where people live and work while cutting down trees for wood. This camp had a store, called a commissary, and a saw mill to cut the wood. The people who came with John Loxley settled in this area. After all the trees were cut, John Loxley went back to Chicago.
Growth in the 1900s
The train depot in Loxley opened on May 5, 1906. This was a big deal because before that, people could only travel by wagon roads to Bay Minette. Also in 1906, Octavia Sauer opened the Loxley post office. She worked as both the postmistress and the train depot agent.
By 1920, Loxley had many businesses. These included an egg store, grocery stores, and general merchandise shops. There was also a drug store, a telegraph office, and a bank. Other businesses included a hotel, a butcher shop, and a repair garage. A grammar school was built in 1925, helping children get an education. The town of Loxley officially became a city in March 1957.
