Lucas Pinheiro Braathen, born on April 19, 2000, is a talented alpine ski racer. He competes in two main types of skiing: slalom and giant slalom. Lucas represents Brazil, but he also has Norwegian roots.

Lucas made history at the 2026 Winter Olympics! He won the gold medal in men's giant slalom. This made him the very first person from Brazil, and from all of South America, to win a medal at the Winter Olympics. He is also the first athlete from any tropical country to achieve this amazing feat.

Before 2024, Lucas competed for Norway. He briefly stepped away from racing in late 2023. But in March 2024, he announced his exciting return, choosing to represent Brazil.

About Lucas Pinheiro Braathen

Lucas's Early Life

Lucas was born in Oslo, Norway, on April 19, 2000. His father is Norwegian, and his mother is Brazilian. When he was young, he lived in the city of Campinas, Brazil, with his mother. Later, he moved back to Norway to live with his father. He often visited Brazil, so he learned to speak both Norwegian and Portuguese.

Lucas first tried skiing when he was just three or four years old. He didn't start skiing regularly until he was nine. As a child, he also played football, but he loved skiing more because it's an individual sport.

Lucas's Skiing Journey

Lucas raced for the Norwegian club Bærums SK. He showed great promise early on. At the Junior World Championships in 2019, he won a silver medal in super-G and a bronze medal in the combined event. He started competing in the World Cup in December 2018, earning his first points by finishing 26th.

Lucas achieved his first World Cup victory in October 2020, winning a giant slalom race in Sölden. In 2022, he won his first slalom race at Wengen. What was amazing is that he started in 29th place after the first run and then climbed all the way to first place! This was a record-breaking jump to victory at that time.

Lucas announced he was stepping away from World Cup racing on October 27, 2023. But he didn't stay away for long! On March 7, 2024, he announced his return, this time representing Brazil. Exactly one year after his break, on October 27, 2024, he competed again in Sölden. He finished an impressive 4th, earning the first-ever World Cup points for Brazil in alpine skiing.

On February 6, 2026, Lucas proudly carried the flag for Brazil at the opening ceremony of the 2026 Winter Olympics. He was a flag bearer alongside Nicole Silveira. Just eight days later, on February 14, he won the gold medal in the men's giant slalom. This was a truly historic moment, marking the first Winter Olympic medal for Brazil, for South America, and for any tropical country!

Beyond the Slopes

Lucas shared news about his personal life on June 17, 2025, when he announced his relationship with Brazilian actress Isadora Cruz.
