The Ribes sericeum is a special type of currant plant. People often call it the Lucia gooseberry or Santa Lucia gooseberry. Its scientific name, sericeum, comes from Latin and means "of silk". This plant is unique because it grows naturally only in California. You can find it in the Santa Lucia Mountains along California's Central Coast. There's also a small group of these plants in Santa Barbara County.

Where Does the Lucia Gooseberry Grow?

The Lucia gooseberry loves to grow near water. You can often find it on streambanks. It lives in forests and areas with scrubby plants. These places provide the right conditions for it to thrive.

What Does the Lucia Gooseberry Look Like?

The Lucia gooseberry is a shrub that stands upright. It can grow to be about one to two meters (40 to 80 inches) tall. Its stems are very hairy and have many small, sharp prickles. They also have tiny sticky bristles.

Stems and Spines

Along the stems, there are special spots called nodes. Each node has three sharp spines. These spines can be longer than a centimeter (about 0.4 inches). They help protect the plant.

Leaves and Flowers

The leaves of the Lucia gooseberry are up to 4 centimeters (1.6 inches) long. They are divided into several parts, like small fingers. The edges of the leaves have tiny teeth. Both sides of the leaves are hairy, especially underneath. They also feel a bit sticky.

The plant produces small flowers. Sometimes there is just one flower, or sometimes two or three grow together in a cluster. Each flower has five green parts that bend backward. These parts might have a red tint or be completely red. Inside, there are smaller, whitish petals shaped like a tube.

Fruit

After the flowers, the plant grows a purple berry. This berry can be up to 2.5 centimeters (1 inch) long. It is covered in many bristles, making it look a bit fuzzy.
