Club Career Highlights
Luciano Castellini was born in Milan, Italy. He started his football journey playing for different clubs. He became known for his amazing skills as a goalkeeper.
Starting at Monza
Castellini began his professional career with Monza. He played there from 1965 to 1970. During the 1966–67 season, his team won the Serie C title. This win helped them get promoted to Serie B, which is a higher league.
Success with Torino
After Monza, Castellini joined Torino in 1970. He made his first appearance in Italy's top league, Serie A, on 30 August 1970. This was in an away game against Ternana, which Torino won 1–0.
His time at Torino was very successful. He helped the team win the Coppa Italia (an Italian cup competition) in 1971. Even more impressively, he was part of the team that won the Serie A championship during the 1975–76 season. He played in 201 Serie A matches for Torino over eight seasons. In total, he played 267 games for the club in all competitions.
Time at Napoli
Castellini finished his playing career with Napoli. He played for Napoli for seven seasons, from 1978 to 1985. During this time, he played in 203 Serie A matches for the club. In his entire career, he played in 404 Serie A games. He is one of the few players who played over 200 games for two different clubs: Torino and Napoli.
While at Napoli, Castellini set an impressive record. He did not let any goals in for 531 minutes in a row. At that time, only another famous goalkeeper, Dino Zoff, had a longer unbeaten streak.
Playing for Italy
Luciano Castellini was also part of the Italian national team. He was chosen for the 1974 FIFA World Cup squad. However, he did not play in any matches during the World Cup. Other great goalkeepers like Dino Zoff and Enrico Albertosi were ahead of him.
He earned his only cap (played in his only international match) for Italy on 26 January 1977. He came on as a substitute in a game against Belgium, which Italy won 2–1.
Coaching Career
After retiring as a player, Castellini became a coach. In 1997, he briefly coached Inter Milan for the last two matches of the Serie A season. He stepped in after the previous coach, Roy Hodgson, left. Castellini helped Inter finish third in the Serie A that season.
Since 1989, he has worked with the Inter Milan youth team as a goalkeeping coach and a scout. He is also currently a member of the staff for the Italy U21 team.
How He Played
Luciano Castellini was known for being a very agile and brave goalkeeper. He had excellent reflexes and was great at jumping high to catch or punch the ball. He was also fast when he needed to rush out of his goal area.
Fans at Torino gave him the nickname "The Jaguar". This was because of his amazing diving saves and his ability to stop powerful shots. Many experts and fans consider him one of the best Italian goalkeepers of his time. He is also seen as one of Torino's best goalkeepers ever. Some even call him Napoli's greatest goalkeeper, even though he didn't win a trophy with them. He received the "Best goalkeeper" award from Guerin Sportivo magazine several times for his fantastic performances.
