Where They Live
The Lucifer titi monkey lives in specific areas of South America. They are found near large rivers like the Solimões River and Napo River. Their home is usually north of these rivers. They also live south of the Japurá River.
Amazon Rainforest Habitat
These monkeys live in the lowland parts of the Amazon rainforest in Colombia. They can be found at altitudes up to about 500 meters (about 1,640 feet). This includes areas like the Putumayo and Caquetá regions of Colombia. Outside of Colombia, their range extends from the Napo River north into the Ecuadorian Amazon.
What They Look Like
The Lucifer titi monkey has mostly blackish fur. However, many hairs on its back and sides are mixed with reddish-brown colors. This gives the monkey a reddish look, especially when sunlight hits its fur. This unique coloring helps them blend into their forest home.
Behavior and Life Cycle
Lucifer titi monkeys are known for their interesting behaviors. Like other titi monkeys, they often live in small family groups. These groups usually include a male, a female, and their young. Titis are also known for their strong pair bonds.
Reproduction
Scientists have observed that Lucifer titi monkeys in Peru often have their babies between December and January. When a new baby is born, it quickly gets used to being carried by the male monkey. The father often carries the baby most of the time. The baby usually goes to the mother only when it needs to nurse.
