Success with Parma
At Parma, Luigi Apolloni quickly became a very important player. He was a strong defender, often playing alongside Lorenzo Minotti. They formed a great defensive team. Together, they helped Parma move from Serie B (a lower league) all the way up to Serie A, which is Italy's top football league. They even helped Parma become one of the best teams in Europe!
During his 13 seasons with Parma, Apolloni and his teammates won many trophies:
- The Coppa Italia (Italian Cup) twice, in 1992 and 1999.
- The UEFA Cup (a big European competition) twice, in 1995 and 1999.
- The UEFA Cup Winners' Cup in 1993.
- The UEFA Super Cup in 1993.
- The Supercoppa Italiana (Italian Super Cup) in 1999.
They also finished second in the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1994. Parma also did very well in Serie A, finishing third in 1995 and second in 1997.
In 1996, Luigi Apolloni had a serious injury. After that, it was hard for him to get back his starting spot on the team. He left Parma in 1999 and joined Hellas Verona. He finished his playing career in 2001. He played a total of 255 games in Italy's top league, scoring 7 goals.
Playing for Italy
Because of his great success with Parma, Luigi Apolloni was chosen to play for the Italy national football team. He played his first international game on May 27, 1994, against Finland. Italy won that game 2–0.
World Cup and Euro Campaigns
Luigi Apolloni played 15 games for Italy between 1994 and 1996. He was part of the Italian team that went to the 1994 FIFA World Cup in the United States. Italy reached the final of the tournament, but they lost to Brazil in a penalty shootout. Apolloni played in that final match.
He also played in the Euro 1996 tournament. Italy won their first game against Russia but lost to the Czech Republic. Apolloni was sent off in the game against the Czech Republic. Italy was eliminated in the first round after a draw against Germany.
