Luigi Apolloni was born on May 2, 1967. He is an Italian football manager and a former player. He played as a centre-back, which is a type of defender. Apolloni is best known for playing many years with the Italian team Parma Calcio 1913. During his 13 seasons there, he helped the club win many important titles. He was also part of the Italy national football team that reached the final of the 1994 FIFA World Cup.
Playing for Football Clubs
Luigi Apolloni was born in Frascati, Italy. He started his football journey in 1983–84 with Lodigiani. He then moved to Pistoiese and began his professional career. After playing for Reggiana, he joined Parma in 1987.
Success with Parma
At Parma, Apolloni became a very important player. He was a strong defender, often playing alongside Lorenzo Minotti. Together, they formed a great partnership in the team's defense. They helped Parma move from Serie B (a lower league) to Serie A (the top league). They also helped the team become one of the best in Europe.
During his time at Parma, Apolloni won many trophies:
- The Coppa Italia in 1992.
- The Cup Winners' Cup in 1993.
- The UEFA Super Cup in 1993.
- Two UEFA Cups in 1995 and 1999.
- The Supercoppa Italiana in 1999.
- Another Coppa Italia in 1999.
Parma also finished second in the Cup Winners' Cup in 1994. They were runners-up in the Supercoppa Italiana in 1995. In Serie A, they finished third in 1995 and second in 1997.
In 1996, Apolloni had a serious injury. After that, he found it hard to get back his starting spot. He left Parma in 1999 and played for Hellas Verona. He ended his playing career in 2001. He played 255 games and scored 7 goals in Italy's top league.
Playing for Italy
Because of his success with Parma, Luigi Apolloni was chosen to play for the Italy national football team. He played his first international game on May 27, 1994. It was a 2–0 win against Finland in Parma.
World Cup and Euro Campaigns
Apolloni played 15 games for Italy between 1994 and 1996. He was part of the Italian team, known as the azzurri, at the 1994 FIFA World Cup. Italy reached the final of the tournament. Apolloni played in the final, but Italy lost to Brazil in a penalty shootout.
He also played in the Euro 1996 tournament. Italy won their first game against Russia 2–1. In the second game, they lost 2–1 to the Czech Republic, and Apolloni was sent off (given a red card). Italy was eliminated from the tournament after a 0–0 draw against Germany.
Becoming a Manager
After retiring as a player, Apolloni started a career in coaching. In 2006, he became an assistant coach at Modena. He later became the main manager for Modena in January 2009. He helped the team avoid being relegated (moved down to a lower league).
In July 2010, he left Modena to manage Grosseto. However, he was removed from that role in September due to poor results. On April 2, 2012, he became the coach of Gubbio until the end of the season. He was the fourth manager for that team in one season.
On May 31, 2018, Apolloni was appointed manager of Modena again. He stayed in that role until January 10, 2019, when he was fired.
