Luis Yáñez Fajardo y La Cueva was an important Spanish nobleman and military leader who lived until 1574. He held the title of the 2nd Marquis of Los Vélez. Being a Grandee of Spain meant he was one of the highest-ranking nobles in the country. He played a significant role in the Spanish military during his time.
His Family and Life
Luis Yáñez Fajardo y La Cueva was the only son of Pedro Fajardo, 1st Marquis of Los Vélez. His mother was Dona Mencía de la Cueva.
In 1526, Luis married Dona Leonor Fernández de Córdoba. She was the daughter of the 3rd Count of Cabra. Luis and Leonor had children, including the person who would become the 3rd Marquis of Los Vélez. However, his son Luis Fajardo, who became an admiral, had a different mother named Ana Ruiz de Avendaño y Alarcón.
Luis Yáñez Fajardo's family line continued to be important. Later, one of his descendants became the 1st Baron of Castellvell de Rosanés and the 1st Marquis of Martorell in 1627.
His Titles and Military Role
Luis Yáñez Fajardo held many important titles. He was the 2nd Marquis of los Vélez and a Grandee of Spain. He was also the 2nd Count of Gagliano and the 4th Count of Cartagena. He was also the lord of several towns, including Alhama, Mula, and Molina de Segura.
He served as the Adelantado-Mayor and Captain-General of the Kingdom of Murcia and Granada. This meant he was a very high-ranking military governor. He was the first to lead his Army into the Kingdom of Granada on January 4 or 6, 1569. He was also the Alcalde (a type of mayor or governor) of Lorca.
Luis was also a Knight and Commander in the Order of Santiago, which was an important military and religious order in Spain.
In 1535, King Charles I of Spain gave him another important title. On August 16, 1535, Luis was made the 1st Marquis of Molina de Segura.
