Luis Siret y Cels (born August 26, 1860, in Sint-Niklaas, Belgium – died June 7, 1934, in Herrerías, Spain) was a famous Belgian-Spanish archaeologist and illustrator. He spent most of his life uncovering secrets of ancient civilizations in Spain.
A New Home in Spain
Luis Siret was born in Belgium. When he was 21 years old, he moved to Cuevas del Almanzora in Almería, Spain. He went there because he was hired as a Mining Engineer in the Sierra Almagrera mountains. This move changed his life and led him to his passion for archaeology.
Discovering Ancient Worlds
For 50 years, Luis Siret and his brother Henri Siret worked together. They explored many ancient sites from different time periods. These included the Neolithic (New Stone Age), Chalcolithic (Copper Age), and Bronze Age.
They found important sites like Almizaraque, Palacés, El Argar, El Gárcel, and Los Millares. Their amazing discoveries helped us understand the prehistory of the southeastern part of the Iberian Peninsula. They also helped scientists figure out the order of different periods, from the Palaeolithic (Old Stone Age) to the Iron Age in that area.
Where to See His Discoveries
The ancient objects Luis Siret collected were shown to the public many years ago. They were part of the 1889 Exposition universelle de Paris and the 1929 Exposición Universal de Barcelona.
Today, you can still see these incredible items in several museums. Some are at the Museo Arqueológico Provincial de Almería in Spain. Others are in the Museo Arqueológico Nacional in Madrid. You can also find them at the Musée du Cinquantenaire in Brussels, Belgium. Important collections also exist in the British Museum in London and the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford.
