Hui Yuan
Huiyuan, a famous Buddhist teacher.

Huiyuan (born 334 AD, died 416 AD) was an important Chinese Buddhist teacher. He is sometimes called "Huiyuan of Mount Lu" because he started the Donglin Temple at the bottom of Mountain Lu in Jiujiang province. In 404 AD, he wrote an important book called On Why Monks Do Not Bow Down Before Kings.

Huiyuan was born in Shanxi province in northern China. Later, he moved south to Jiujiang province, which was part of the Eastern Jin Dynasty. He passed away in Jiujiang in 416 AD. After his death, he was honored as the first leader of the Pure Land School of Buddhism. He also founded the White Lotus Society, which was an early group of Buddhists who followed Amitabha Buddha. Some of his students included Huiguan (慧觀), Sengji (僧濟), and Faan (法安).

Huiyuan started learning about important Chinese ideas when he was young. He studied the Zhuangzi, Laozi, and the teachings of Confucius. When he was 21, he became a Buddhist in Hebei Province. This happened after he heard the monk Dao An preach. Dao An was a Chinese student of a Buddhist missionary from Kucha. Huiyuan was so inspired by Dao An's sermons that he decided to dedicate his life to Buddhist teachings. This meant he chose to live as a monk.

Later, Huiyuan founded the Donglin Temple, also known as East Forest Temple. It was built at the foot of Mountain Lu. He taught many different Buddhist ideas. These included the vinaya (戒律), which are rules for monks, and meditation (禪法). He also taught about abhidharma (deeper Buddhist teachings) and Prajna, which means wisdom.

Huiyuan's Influence and Writings

Even though Huiyuan preferred to focus on his religious life, he did have connections with important people. These included government officials and wealthy families. The leader Huan Xuan invited Huiyuan twice to discuss the role of Buddhist monks. Huiyuan strongly argued that Buddhist monks should be independent from the government. Many educated people came to live on Mount Lu as Huiyuan's students. They joined in the religious life at the temple. Huiyuan also exchanged letters with another famous monk named Kumarajiva.

In 402 AD, Huiyuan brought together a group of monks and other followers. They formed a Mahayana Buddhist group known as Pure Land Buddhism. The Pure Land is seen as a peaceful western paradise of the Buddha Amitabha.

In 404 AD, Huiyuan wrote his famous book, On Why Monks Do Not Bow Down Before Kings (沙門不敬王者論). This book was very important. It showed his efforts to make sure Buddhist monks could practice their religion freely. He wanted them to be independent from the control of kings and rulers. The book also aimed to convince rulers and their advisors that Buddhists were loyal citizens. He explained that Buddhists believed in karma, which means good actions lead to good results. He also said that Buddhists wanted to be reborn in paradise. Because of these beliefs, they would make good subjects in a kingdom. Huiyuan wrote that even though Buddhists leave their families to become monks, they still "first serve their parents and obey their lords."
