Understanding the Name Shanxi

How to Say Shanxi and Shaanxi
The first part of "Shanxi" is said using the first tone in Mandarin Chinese. The first part of "Shaanxi" is said using the third tone. Since tone marks are not always used, "Shaanxi" is sometimes spelled with an extra 'a' to show the different pronunciation.
Why Shanxi is Called Jin
The short name for Shanxi is Jin (晋). This is used to avoid confusion with another province, Shandong. Shandong also has the word "Shan" (山) in its name, which means "mountain" in Chinese.
