The Luther Burbank Home and Gardens is a cool city park in Santa Rosa, California. It's where a famous American plant scientist, Luther Burbank, used to live and work. You can visit his old home, greenhouse, and beautiful gardens. His grave is also located here.
This park is found where Santa Rosa Avenue and Sonoma Avenue meet. It's open every day, and you can visit for free! If you want a special tour, there's a small fee. This important place is recognized as a National Historic Landmark and a California Historical Landmark (number 234).
The Story of Luther Burbank's Home
Luther Burbank lived in Santa Rosa for over 50 years. He did most of his amazing plant work right here at this spot. From 1884 to 1906, he lived in the house you see in the park today. This house is built in the Greek Revival style.
After 1906, he moved to another house nearby, but that house isn't there anymore. When Luther Burbank passed away in 1926, his wife, Elizabeth, moved back into the park's house. She lived there until she passed away in 1977.
Who Was Luther Burbank?
Luther Burbank was born in Massachusetts. He became a very well-known person across the country. He was famous for creating many new kinds of plants. He introduced more than 250 new types of fruit! This includes many different kinds of plums that farmers still grow today.
Because of his important work, part of his property was named a National Historic Landmark in 1964. The site is also listed as a historic landmark for Santa Rosa and Sonoma County.
Exploring the Gardens
The gardens at the park show off many of the plants Luther Burbank created. You can see collections of cactus, different kinds of fruit trees, pretty ornamental grasses, and even herbs used for medicine. There are also lovely roses and walnut trees.
Most of the plants have labels. These labels tell you their scientific names and their common names. Luther Burbank himself designed and built the garden's greenhouse in 1889. You can also find Burbank's grave nearby, under a large Cedar of Lebanon tree.
