The Luther Burbank Home and Gardens is a special city park in Santa Rosa, California. It was once the home, greenhouse, and gardens of a famous American plant scientist named Luther Burbank (1849-1926). His grave is also located here.
This park is found where Santa Rosa Avenue and Sonoma Avenue meet. You can visit the park every day for free. If you want a guided tour, there is a small fee. This important place is recognized as a National Historic Landmark and a California Historical Landmark (number 234).
History of the Gardens
Luther Burbank lived in Santa Rosa for over 50 years. Most of his important plant experiments happened right here. From 1884 to 1906, he lived in the beautiful Greek Revival style house you see in the park today. Later, he moved to another house nearby, which is no longer standing. After Burbank passed away in 1926, his wife, Elizabeth, moved back into the house and lived there until 1977.
Burbank was born in Massachusetts and became very famous across the country. He was known for creating many new kinds of plants. He developed more than 250 new types of fruit, including many different kinds of plums that are still used by farmers today. Because of its importance, part of the property was named a National Historic Landmark in 1964. It is also on the official list of Santa Rosa historic landmarks and the Sonoma County Historical Society's list.
Exploring the Gardens
The gardens are filled with many of the plants Luther Burbank introduced to the world. You can find collections of cactus, different kinds of fruit trees, pretty ornamental grasses, medicinal herbs, beautiful roses, and walnut trees. Most plants have labels that tell you their scientific and common names.
Burbank himself designed and built the garden's greenhouse in 1889. You can also find his grave nearby, resting under a large Cedar of Lebanon tree.
