History of Luverne
Luverne started as a town because of a new railroad. In 1889, the Montgomery and Florida Railroad was being built. Luverne was planned to be the end of this railroad line. This new train station helped the town grow quickly.
The town officially became a city in 1891. Luverne was a center for cutting down trees in the pine forests. The land was not good for large farms.
In 1893, the people of Crenshaw County decided to move the county seat to Luverne. A county seat is the main town where the county government offices are located. They moved it from a smaller town called Rutledge because Luverne had more people.
