Where is Rutledge?
Rutledge is located right in the middle of Crenshaw County. You can find it at coordinates 31°43′59″N 86°18′35″W / 31.73306°N 86.30972°W.
The city of Luverne is very close. It is the main town in Crenshaw County and sits right next to Rutledge's eastern side.
The U.S. Census Bureau says that Rutledge covers about 15.2 square kilometers (or 5.86 square miles) of land. There is no water area within the town limits.
A Look at Rutledge's Past
Rutledge started out with a different name: Barber's Crossroads. It was first settled by a person named Jared Phelps Barber.
For a short time, the town was called Crenshaw. But on June 10, 1867, its name was changed to Rutledge. This was done to honor Captain Henry Rutledge. He was a soldier in the 59th Alabama Infantry during the American Civil War.
Rutledge was very important in the early days of Crenshaw County. It was the first county seat, which means it was where the county government was located. It held this position from March 1867 until May 1893. The town officially became an incorporated town in 1871.
