Luxora is a small city located in Mississippi County, Arkansas, in the United States. In 2020, about 942 people lived there. This was a bit less than the 1,178 people who lived there in 2010.

Luxora's History

Early Settlement and Name

Luxora started as a community called Elmot Landing in the 1880s. It was right next to the Mississippi River. By 1897, the town moved a little further inland. It settled behind a large protective wall called a federal levee. At this time, it officially became a city and was named Luxora. The city was named after the daughter of a local businessman.

World War II Role

During World War II, the Civil Aeronautics Authority had a special landing field near Luxora. This field was used by young Air Cadets. They came from nearby military airfields like Blytheville Army Airfield and Walnut Ridge Army Air Field.

Geography of Luxora

Luxora is located in the eastern part of Mississippi County, Arkansas. Its southeastern border is close to the state line of Tennessee. This border follows a small channel of the Mississippi River.

U.S. Route 61 runs along the northwest side of the city. This highway goes north about 14 miles to Blytheville. It also goes southwest about 5 miles to Osceola. The city covers a total area of about 0.9 square miles (2.2 square kilometers).

Education in Luxora

Students in Luxora attend public schools run by the Rivercrest School District. This district used to be called the Southern Mississippi County School District.

  • Older students attend Rivercrest High School. This high school is located near Wilson.

The original Luxora School District joined with the Southern Mississippi County School District on July 1, 1986.
