Early Life and Music Career

Where Was Lynn Strait Born?

Lynn Strait was born on August 7, 1968, in Manhasset, New York. His father was in the United States Armed Forces. Because of this, his family moved around the country a lot. When Lynn was 10 years old, they settled down in Santa Barbara, California. As an adult, he learned he had Tourette syndrome, a condition that causes sudden movements or sounds.

How Did Lynn Strait Start in Music?

As a teenager, Lynn Strait became part of the 'SoCal' punk scene. Before joining Snot, he played bass guitar in a thrash metal band called Lethal Dose. He had never been a singer in a band before Snot. He once said he always wanted to sing because it looked fun. He also liked that he could create his own unique singing style.

Strait was good friends with singer Tairrie B. Snot played their very first show in 1995. They opened for Tairrie B's band, Manhole (later known as Tura Satana). Lynn Strait also sang as a guest on Manhole's first album, All Is Not Well (1996). He sang a song called "Down" with Tairrie B.

Getting a recording contract was a big deal for many musicians. But Strait was very calm about it. He famously said, "Now I can order cheese on my Whopper." This showed his down-to-earth personality.

Death and Lasting Impact

How Did Lynn Strait Pass Away?

On December 11, 1998, Lynn Strait was involved in a car crash. He was traveling from Santa Barbara, California to Los Angeles. The accident happened on a highway off-ramp. Only one other driver was hurt in the crash. Lynn Strait's dog, Dobbs, also died in the accident. Dobbs was very special to the band. He was even on the cover of Snot's 1997 first album, Get Some. Dobbs was like the band's mascot.

How Is Lynn Strait Remembered?

Many musicians and bands have honored Lynn Strait after his death. The band Sevendust wrote a song called "Angel's Son" as a tribute to him.

A special tribute album called Strait Up was released on November 7, 2000. Many famous bands helped create this album. These included members from Limp Bizkit, Korn, Slipknot, Sevendust, Hed PE, Coal Chamber, Sugar Ray, System of a Down, Soulfly, Incubus, and even Ozzy Osbourne. The album featured tributes to Strait with music from the remaining members of Snot. It also had a new version of Strait's last recording with Snot, a song called "Absent."

On August 7, 1999, fans were asked to buy copies of Snot's first CD, Get Some. This was an effort to make the album climb the music charts on what would have been Strait's 31st birthday.

Other bands have also mentioned Lynn Strait in their songs. The band My Ruin, led by Tairrie B, paid tribute to him with their song "Rockstar." The band NOFX mentioned Strait and Dobbs in their song "Doornails." This song honored punk band members who had passed away. Lynn Strait had actually sung background vocals on NOFX's song "The Brews" before. The British band Reuben also honored him and Kurt Cobain in their song "Push."

Lynn Strait's unique style and personality left a lasting mark on the music world.
