History of Lyons
Early Settlers and Growth
The first people to settle in Lyons arrived in the summer of 1866. The land in the Logan Valley was very good for farming. Also, a railroad came to the area in 1881. These two things helped the town grow and become successful.
Lyons officially became a town in 1884. It was named after Waldo Lyon, who was an important person in the area. He owned the land where the town was built. There is an old rule in Lyons that says alcohol cannot be sold in the town. If this rule is broken, the property could be lost.
Old Mill and Brickyard
A large mill called the Lyons Roller Mill was built in 1869. This building had three stories. It used water from a dam on Logan Creek to power its machines. The mill worked for many years, until 1931.
Many of the buildings in Lyons are made from bricks. These bricks came from a local brickyard that started in 1878. The area where the town's swimming pool is now located was once the pit where clay for these bricks was dug out.
The Kite Track
In 1891, a very famous horse racing track opened just west of Lyons. It was called the Kite Track because of its unique shape. Some of the fastest horses in the country raced there. They even broke world records and won big prizes. However, racing stopped after 1893 due to tough economic times.

Storefront Theater
The Storefront Theater is a unique place on Main Street in Lyons. It is part of a bigger art project called "Byway of Art." This project received a large grant to create art in the area.
The Storefront Theater was designed by Adele Phillips and Matthew Mazzotta. It looks like a normal shop from the outside. But the front of the building can actually lower down to the street. Bleachers (seats) then pull out from behind it. This creates a special outdoor stage and seating area for performances. It's a very clever way to bring art to the community. The theater was recognized as one of the best public art projects in 2016.
