A Look Back in Time: Lyons' History

Lyons has an interesting past, especially connected to its famous hospital and train station.

  • The area was named after the David Lyon farm, which was a large part of the land.
  • The Lyons Train Station was built in 1931. It has a unique design with stucco, brick, and limestone. It was built mainly to help visitors get to the new Veterans Hospital. This was the last train station built on the Gladstone Branch. Today, Bernards Township owns it.
  • The Lyons Train Station is so important that it is listed on both the state and national historic registries.
  • The Lyons VA Medical Center began construction on July 11, 1929.
  • The first patients arrived at the hospital on November 12, 1930. They were moved from a hospital in New York City. By July 1931, 415 patients were living and receiving care there.
  • The hospital was officially opened on Saturday, July 23, 1931.
  • For many years, the Lyons VA Medical Center was the only VA hospital in New Jersey. Another one opened in East Orange in 1952. The Lyons hospital was recognized as a historic district in 2013.
  • Lyons also has its own Fire Department, located on the grounds of the VA hospital.
  • A local historian named Brooks Betz noted that many people moved to Bernards Township to work at or support the Lyons VA. This helped the area's population grow a lot.
