Lys Assia (born Rosa Mina Schärer; 3 March 1924 – 24 March 2018) was a famous Swiss singer. She made history by winning the very first Eurovision Song Contest in 1956. Lys Assia was born in Rupperswil, Aargau, Switzerland. She started her career as a dancer. Later, in 1940, she became a singer and found great success.
Her Journey with Eurovision
Lys Assia is best known for her connection to the Eurovision Song Contest. This is a big music competition where countries from Europe (and some others) compete.
In 1956, she sang for Switzerland and won the first-ever contest. This was a huge moment in music history! She also tried to represent Germany that same year. Lys Assia returned to the contest for Switzerland in 1957 and 1958. After her Eurovision win, her song "O mein Papa" became very popular in Germany.
Lys Assia remained a special part of the Eurovision family. In 2005, she performed at a special show. This event celebrated "Congratulations: 50 Years of the Eurovision Song Contest". It marked 50 years of the contest.
In 2009, she helped present the Eurovision trophy. She gave it to the winner, Alexander Rybak, alongside Dima Bilan.
Lys Assia even tried to compete again when she was older. In 2011, she entered a song called "C'était ma vie" for the Swiss selection. She hoped to go to the Eurovision Song Contest 2012 in Baku, Azerbaijan. Her song finished in eighth place. She still attended the event as a special guest.
In 2012, she tried again with the song "All in Your Head". This was for the Swiss national selection for the Eurovision Song Contest 2013. She later made a guest appearance during the contest's semi-final.
Her last public appearance was in 2015. At 91 years old, Lys Assia attended a concert in London. This concert celebrated the Contest's 60th anniversary. It was called Eurovision Song Contest's Greatest Hits.
Her Personal Life
Lys Assia married Johann Heinrich Kunz in 1957. Sadly, he passed away just nine months later. In 1963, she married Oscar Pedersen, a businessman from Denmark. He died in 1995. Lys Assia passed away on 24 March 2018 in Zürich, Switzerland.
