A Look at Móra d'Ebre's History
People have lived in the Móra d'Ebre area for a very long time. The oldest signs of settlements date back to about 4000 BC. This was during the Neolithic period, when early farmers lived here. Later, the Iberians, an ancient people of the Iberian Peninsula, made their home here. They lived in the area until the Romans arrived and took control.
In 1153, the area was taken back from the Moors, who were Muslim people from North Africa. This was done by Count Ramon Berenguer IV of Barcelona. After this, Móra d'Ebre became part of a large estate called the Barony of Entença.
The Castle of Móra d'Ebre
The old castle of Móra d'Ebre stands on a hill. It looks over the river and the town. Today, the castle is partly in ruins. This is because it was used as a fortress during the Spanish Civil War. It suffered heavy damage from bombs and shelling. Some parts of the castle have been rebuilt on the western side. Many houses in the town were also damaged, and their repair has been slow.
