Mayankodu Kelath Narayanan (born on March 10, 1934) is a retired officer from the Indian Police Service (IPS). He held very important positions in the Indian government. From 2005 to 2010, he served as the National Security Advisor of India. After that, he became the 19th Governor of West Bengal from 2010 to 2014. The Government of India honored him with the Padma Shri award in 1992. This is a high civilian award given for special service to the nation.
Early Life and Education
M. K. Narayanan comes from the Kelath family in Ottapalam, a town in the Kerala state of India.
He went to school at Madras Christian College Higher Secondary School. Later, he completed his college studies at Loyola College, Chennai. He is married to Padmini Narayanan. They have a son named Vijay and a daughter named Meena.
A Career in Public Service
M. K. Narayanan joined the Indian Police Service in 1955. He achieved the highest marks in his group. After working briefly as a police officer in the state of Madras, he joined the Intelligence Bureau in 1959. This agency works to protect India's internal and national security.
He spent most of his career working for the Government of India, mainly in the Intelligence Bureau. He became the head of the Intelligence Bureau from 1987 to 1990. After that, he led the Joint Intelligence Committee for a year. He returned to lead the Intelligence Bureau again in 1991 before retiring in 1992.
In 2004, he was appointed as a special advisor for internal security to the Prime Minister of India. From 2005 to 2010, he served as India's National Security Advisor. In this role, he advised the Prime Minister on important matters of national safety and security. He played a key part in the talks for the Indo-US Civil Nuclear Agreement, which was a big deal between India and the United States.
In 2010, he became the Governor of West Bengal. The Governor represents the President of India in a state and plays an important role in its administration.
