Ma'ruf Amin (born 11 March 1943) is an Indonesian politician and Islamic leader. He served as the 13th Vice President of Indonesia from 2019 to 2024. When he took office, he was almost 77 years old. This made him the oldest Indonesian vice president ever sworn in.
Before becoming vice president, he was the leader of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI). This is a very important group of Islamic scholars in Indonesia. In 2018, President Joko Widodo chose Ma'ruf Amin to be his running mate for the 2019 presidential election. After this, he stepped down from his role as a top leader of Nahdlatul Ulama (NU). NU is one of the world's largest Islamic organizations.

Early Life and Education

Ma'ruf Amin was born in 1943 during the time when Japan occupied Indonesia. His parents were Mohamad Amin and Maimunah. He went to primary school in Kresek. Later, he studied at Pesantren Tebuireng in Jombang, East Java. A pesantren is an Islamic boarding school. This school was started by Hasyim Asy'ari, who also founded Nahdlatul Ulama.
After finishing his studies there, Ma'ruf Amin earned a bachelor's degree. He studied Islamic philosophy at Ibnu Khaldun University in Bogor, West Java.
Career in Politics and Religion
After college, Ma'ruf Amin started teaching about Islam in Jakarta. At that time, Nahdlatul Ulama was also a political party. In 1971, Ma'ruf Amin was elected to the Indonesian parliament. This parliament is called the People's Representative Council (DPR).
In 1977, he was elected to the Jakarta City Council. He was a member of the United Development Party (PPP). He served one term until 1982 and led the PPP group in the council. After this, Ma'ruf Amin focused more on teaching and community work. In 1989, he became a senior leader within Nahdlatul Ulama's main council. He later became one of the top leaders, overseeing the work of Abdurrahman Wahid.
After the fall of President Suharto in 1998, Ma'ruf Amin became an advisor. He advised Abdurrahman Wahid and his National Awakening Party (PKB). He continued to advise Wahid during his time as President of Indonesia from 1999 to 2001. Ma'ruf Amin then returned to active politics. He represented the PKB in the national parliament from 1999 to 2004. During this time, he led the committee for agriculture and food. He also worked on government affairs.
After 2004, Ma'ruf Amin did not run for re-election to parliament. He returned to the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI). There, he led the National Sharia Committee from 2004 to 2010. He also advised President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono from 2007 to 2014.
In 2015, Ma'ruf Amin became the supreme leader of Nahdlatul Ulama. This is the highest position in the organization. A few weeks later, he was also chosen to be the chairman of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI). He took over from Din Syamsuddin.
Becoming Vice President
In 2019, President Joko Widodo decided to run for president again. His current vice president, Jusuf Kalla, could not run again. This was because of rules about how many terms a vice president can serve. Many people wondered who Jokowi would choose as his new running mate.
On August 9, 2018, President Widodo made a surprising announcement. He said that Ma'ruf Amin would be his vice-presidential candidate. Jokowi explained that he chose Ma'ruf Amin because of his long experience. This included his work in government and his deep knowledge of religious matters.
The election results were announced on May 21, 2019. Widodo and Ma'ruf Amin won with 55.5 percent of the votes. Ma'ruf Amin officially became the Vice President-elect.
Vice Presidency
Ma'ruf Amin was sworn in as Vice President on October 20, 2019. At 76 years and 223 days old, he became the oldest person to ever be sworn in as Indonesia's vice president.
Personal Life
Ma'ruf Amin's first wife, Siti Churiyah, passed away in 2013. They were married for 49 years and had nine children and 13 grandchildren. In 2014, he married Wury Estu Handayani. Their wedding was a private ceremony in Jakarta.
Ma'ruf Amin is also a fan of association football, which is also known as soccer. He used to support the English football club Manchester United. However, in 2019, he changed his favorite team to their rival, Liverpool.
