Gibran Rakabuming Raka (born 1 October 1987) is an Indonesian politician and businessman. He is currently the 14th Vice President of Indonesia. Before this, he was the mayor of Surakarta, a city in Indonesia.
Gibran is the oldest child of Joko Widodo, who is the seventh President of Indonesia. In the 2024 Indonesian presidential election, Gibran ran as the vice-presidential candidate alongside Prabowo Subianto.
He finished his first nine years of school in Surakarta. Then, he moved to Singapore to study at Orchid Park Secondary School. Even though he was mayor for a short time, Gibran made a big difference in Surakarta. He was even named the most popular mayor in 2021.
Gibran's run for vice president at age 36 caused some discussion. The Constitutional Court of Indonesia allowed him to run. This was an exception for elected regional leaders. The General Elections Commission also faced issues for letting him register early. Despite this, Prabowo and Gibran won the 2024 election. They received about 96 million votes, which was 59 percent.

Early Life and Education
Gibran was born in Surakarta, Central Java, Indonesia, on 1 October 1987. He is the first child of Joko Widodo and Iriana. They have three children in total.
Gibran completed his first nine years of schooling in Surakarta. After that, he moved to Singapore. There, he studied at Orchid Park Secondary School.
After secondary school, Gibran went to UTS Insearch. This program helps foreign students prepare for studying at the University of Technology Sydney in Australia. However, he decided to return to Singapore for his college education. He earned his diploma from the Management Development Institute of Singapore (MDIS) in 2010. He also got a Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree from the connected University of Bradford.
Business Career
After working for his family's furniture business for a few years, Gibran started his own company. In 2010, he founded Chilli Pari, a catering business in Surakarta. Gibran said he got the idea because his father's conference center needed catering services.
His father, Jokowi, initially wanted Gibran to take over the family furniture business. He was not happy about Gibran's decision to start a catering company. However, Chilli Pari grew and became very popular. It focused on providing services for wedding parties.
In 2015, Gibran started another business called Markobar. This was a chain of martabak (a type of Indonesian pancake) shops. By 2017, Markobar had opened 29 locations across Indonesia. Jokowi later said that even though he didn't approve of Gibran's food businesses at first, Gibran's company ended up being worth more than his own furniture company. In 2020, Gibran's reported wealth was about Rp22.1 billion. This was a requirement for him to run for public office.
Early Political Career
Mayor of Surakarta
In July 2019, Gibran became a popular choice for the 2020 Surakarta mayoral election. This was shown in a survey by Slamet Riyadi University. Being mayor of Surakarta was his father's job before he became Governor of Jakarta and then President of Indonesia.
Two months after the survey, Gibran joined PDI-P, his father's political party. He wanted to run in the mayoral election. In July 2020, PDI-P officially chose Gibran as their candidate for mayor. They paired him with Teguh Prakosa, who was the city council speaker.
Most political parties in the city council supported Gibran. They knew it would be hard to win against someone with Jokowi's influence. This almost led to an election with only one candidate. However, Bagyo Wahyono, a tailor, registered as an independent candidate. He was approved on 6 September 2020.
In the election, Gibran won by a large margin. He received 86.53 percent of the votes, which was 225,451 votes. Gibran benefited from being the president's son. He was also the son of the city's most popular former mayor. His campaign also spent much more money than Bagyo's.
Even though he was mayor for a short time, Gibran had a big effect on Surakarta. He was named the most popular mayor in 2021 by Indonesia Indicator (I2). This was partly because of his connection to his father, President Joko Widodo. It was also because he took quick action to help with the COVID-19 pandemic. He also promoted policies that got a lot of attention in the news.
After winning the 2024 election and becoming vice president, Gibran resigned as Mayor of Surakarta on 16 July 2024. Vice Mayor Prakosa was then sworn in to take his place on 19 July.
Presidential Candidacy
2024 General Election

In late 2022, some groups supporting Jokowi started to suggest Gibran as a vice-presidential candidate. At that time, candidates for vice president had to be 40 years old or older. Gibran would be 37 during the election.
To allow Gibran to run, the Constitutional Court of Indonesia made a special ruling on 17 October 2023. The court was led by Gibran's uncle-in-law, Anwar Usman. The ruling added an exception to the age rule for people who had already been elected as regional leaders.
Four days later, on 21 October 2023, the Golkar party announced Gibran as their vice-presidential candidate. Golkar was part of Prabowo Subianto's group. Gibran was still a member of the PDI-P party at this time.
Prabowo announced Gibran as his official running mate the next day. Gibran was not there for the announcement because he was busy with his mayoral work in Surakarta. He then sent a letter to his father, the president, the next day to ask for permission.
The leaders of the General Elections Commission (KPU) were found to have broken ethics rules. They allowed Gibran to register his candidacy before they had officially changed the age rule for candidates in their own rules.
The election happened on February 14. Prabowo and Gibran quickly took the lead in the vote counts. They had an average of 57% of the votes. The Anies-Muhaimin team had about 27%, and the Ganjar-Mahfud team had about 16%. These numbers showed that Prabowo and Gibran won the election in the first round.
