Since 2004, the President and Vice President are chosen together by a direct vote from the people. They serve for a five-year term.
The idea for a Vice President came from the group that helped prepare Indonesia's independence in 1945. On August 18, 1945, a special committee chose Sukarno as the first President and Mohammad Hatta as the first Vice President.
