Muhammad Jusuf Kalla (born 15 May 1942), often called JK, is an Indonesian politician and businessman. He served as the 10th and 12th vice president of Indonesia. He is the only vice president in Indonesia's history to serve two terms that were not one after the other (from 2004–2009 and 2014–2019).

In 2009, he ran for president but was not successful. Before he became the running mate for Joko Widodo in the 2014 election, many people thought he was a strong candidate for president. Since 2009, Kalla has been the chairman of the Indonesian Red Cross Society.

Early Life and Education

Jusuf Kalla was born on 15 May 1942 in Watampone, which is now in South Sulawesi. His father, Hadji Kalla, was a local businessman. His mother, Athirah, sold Buginese silk. He was the second of ten children in his family.

After finishing school, Kalla studied at Hasanuddin University in Makassar. There, he joined a student group called the Indonesian Student Action Front (KAMI). This group supported General Suharto in his efforts to gain power. Kalla became the leader of the KAMI branch in South Sulawesi. He was interested in politics early on. He became a member of the local parliament and led the Youth Division of the Golkar party.

Business Career

In 1967, Kalla graduated from Hasanuddin University with a degree in Economics. At that time, the economy was not doing well. His father thought about closing their family business, NV Hadji Kalla. Instead, Kalla decided to take over the company.

In 1968, Kalla became the CEO of NV Hadji Kalla. His father became the chairman. At first, the business was small, with only one employee. Kalla's mother helped by selling silk and running a small bus transportation business. Over time, the company grew and became very successful.

NV Hadji Kalla expanded from trading goods to other areas. These included hotels, building roads, car dealerships, and real estate. It also got into shipping, shrimp farming, and telecommunications. Today, "NV Hadji Kalla" is known as the Kalla Group. It is one of the biggest business groups in Indonesia, especially in Eastern Indonesia.

In 1977, Kalla also earned a degree from INSEAD in France.

Community Involvement

Besides his business, Kalla has been active in many important organizations. From 1979 to 1989, he was the chairman of the Indonesian Economics Graduates Association (ISEI) in Makassar. He is still an adviser for ISEI. Kalla was also very involved with the Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KADIN). He led KADIN in South Sulawesi from 1985 to 1998. He also helped coordinate KADIN's work in eastern Indonesia.

Kalla is also on the board of trustees for three universities in Makassar. He has helped the community by building the Al Markaz Mosque and leading its Islamic center. In 2015, the Jusuf Kalla School of Government was opened at Muhammadiyah University of Yogyakarta. Kalla helped fund this school.

Political Journey

Member of the People's Consultative Assembly

Kalla returned to politics in 1987. He was chosen to be a representative for South Sulawesi in the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR). He was chosen again in 1992, 1997, and 1999.

Serving Under Presidents Wahid and Megawati

When Kyai Haji Abdurrahman Wahid became president in 1999, Kalla joined his cabinet. He became the Minister of Industry and Trade. After six months, President Wahid removed him from this role.

In July 2001, President Wahid was removed from office. Vice President Megawati Sukarnoputri became the new president. She chose Kalla to be in her cabinet again. He became the Coordinating Minister of People's Welfare.

Even though it wasn't his main job, Kalla helped solve religious conflicts. He helped end a conflict in Poso, Sulawesi, by helping people negotiate. This led to the Malino II Accord being signed in December 2001. Two months later, Kalla helped solve another conflict in Ambon and Molucca. He worked with Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono to achieve this.

Becoming Vice President

Because he helped bring peace in Sulawesi, Kalla became a well-known figure. He thought about running for president in the 2004 elections. In August 2003, he announced his plan to run.

However, as time went on, Kalla was seen more as a good candidate for vice president. People thought his background, not being from Java, would help attract votes from different parts of Indonesia.

Just before the Golkar party meeting, Kalla decided not to run for president under Golkar. Instead, he accepted an offer from Democratic Party's (PD) Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono to be his running mate. They also got support from other parties.

The presidential election was held on 5 July 2004. Yudhoyono and Kalla won the most votes, but not enough to win right away. So, a second election round was needed.

In the second round, Yudhoyono and Kalla faced Megawati. On 20 September 2004, Yudhoyono and Kalla won the election with 60.1% of the votes.

First Term as Vice President

Even though Yudhoyono won the presidency, his party was not very strong in the parliament. Kalla decided to run for chairman of the Golkar party. On 19 December 2004, Kalla was elected as the new Chairman of Golkar. This made him a very powerful figure.

Sometimes, there were differences in how Yudhoyono and Kalla approached things. For example, after the Indian Ocean tsunami, Kalla quickly started work to help Aceh. Yudhoyono later said he had given the orders for Kalla to do so.

Another time, when Yudhoyono was in New York for a UN meeting, he held video calls to get reports from ministers. Some people thought this showed he didn't fully trust Kalla. However, Yudhoyono clarified that Kalla was helping him lead.

Presidential Candidacy and Second Vice Presidency

Kalla was often mentioned as a possible candidate for the Golkar Party in the 2014 presidential race. In 2009, Kalla ran for president with Wiranto as his running mate, but they finished third.

In 2012, Kalla said he would be willing to run for president in 2014 if he had enough public support. Later, he said he did not plan to run against his party's chosen candidate, Aburizal Bakrie. However, in late 2012, Kalla hinted that he might join a ticket with former president Megawati as the presidential candidate and himself as the vice-presidential candidate.

On 19 May 2014, Joko Widodo, the presidential candidate for the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP), announced that Jusuf Kalla would be his vice-presidential running mate.

During his second term as vice president, Kalla spoke about environmental issues, like the haze from forest fires. He mentioned that Indonesia's neighbors benefited from Indonesia's clean air for most of the year. He also discussed international agreements with other countries.

After his time as vice president, he continued to be active in community work. On 22 December 2009, he was chosen as the chairman of the Indonesian Red Cross Society (PMI). Kalla said that under his leadership, the PMI would build up its blood bank. This would help prepare for increased demand for blood during natural disasters or for hospital patients.

He also has an advanced amateur radio license. His call sign is YC8HYK.
