Muhammad Jusuf Kalla, often called JK, is an Indonesian politician and businessman. He was the 10th and 12th vice president of Indonesia. He is the only person in Indonesia's history to serve two terms as vice president that were not back-to-back (from 2004–2009 and 2014–2019). Before he became Joko Widodo's running mate in the 2014 election, polls showed he was one of the top choices for president.
Since 2009, Kalla has been the chairman of the Indonesian Red Cross Society.

Early Life and Education
Jusuf Kalla was born on May 15, 1942, in Watampone, which is now in South Sulawesi. His father, Hadji Kalla, was a local businessman. His mother, Athirah, sold Buginese silk. He was the second of ten children in his family.
After finishing school, Kalla studied at Hasanuddin University in Makassar. There, he joined a student group called the Indonesian Student Action Front (KAMI). This group supported General Suharto in his efforts to gain power. Kalla became the head of the KAMI branch in South Sulawesi. He also showed interest in politics early on. He became a member of the local parliament (DPRD) and led the Youth Division of the Golkar party.
Business Career
In 1967, Kalla graduated from Hasanuddin University with a degree in Economics. At that time, the economy was difficult. His father thought about closing their family business, NV Hadji Kalla. Instead, Jusuf Kalla decided to take over the company.
In 1968, Kalla became the CEO of NV Hadji Kalla, while his father became the chairman. At first, the business was small, with only one employee. Kalla's mother helped by trading silk and running a small bus transportation business. Over time, the company grew and became very successful.
NV Hadji Kalla expanded from just import-export trading into many other areas. These included hotels, building infrastructure, car dealerships, and real estate. The company is now known as the Kalla Group. It is one of the biggest business groups in Indonesia, especially in Eastern Indonesia. In 1977, Kalla also studied at INSEAD in France.
Community Involvement
Besides his business work, Kalla has been active in many important organizations. From 1979 to 1989, he led the Indonesian Economics Graduates Association (ISEI) in Makassar. He is still an adviser for ISEI.
Kalla was also very involved with the Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KADIN). He was the chairman for KADIN in South Sulawesi from 1985 to 1998. He also helped coordinate KADIN's work in eastern Indonesia. Kalla is on the board of trustees for three universities in Makassar. He has also helped the community by building the Al Markaz Mosque and leading its Islamic center.
In 2015, the Jusuf Kalla School of Government was started at Muhammadiyah University of Yogyakarta. Kalla helped fund this school.
Political Journey
Joining the People's Consultative Assembly
Kalla returned to active politics in 1987. He was chosen to be a representative for South Sulawesi in the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR). He was re-elected to the MPR in 1992, 1997, and 1999.
Serving Under Presidents Wahid and Megawati
When Abdurrahman Wahid became president in 1999, Kalla was appointed Minister of Industry and Trade. After six months, President Wahid removed him from his position.
In July 2001, President Wahid was removed from office. Vice President Megawati Sukarnoputri then became president. She included Kalla in her cabinet as the Coordinating Minister of People's Welfare. Even though it wasn't his main job, Kalla helped solve a religious conflict in Poso, Sulawesi. He helped arrange talks that led to the Malino II Accord on December 20, 2001. This agreement ended a three-year conflict.
Two months later, Kalla helped solve another conflict in Sulawesi. On February 12, 2002, Kalla worked with Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono to resolve a similar conflict on Ambon and Molucca. This was done through a second Malino Declaration.
Becoming Vice President
Because he helped bring peace to Sulawesi, Kalla became a popular figure. He thought about running for president in the 2004 elections. In August 2003, he announced his plan to run. However, as time went on, Kalla was seen more as a good candidate for vice president. People thought his non-Javanese background would help attract votes from different parts of Indonesia.
Just before the Golkar party convention, Kalla decided not to run for president under Golkar. Instead, he accepted an offer from Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono of the Democratic Party to be his running mate.
The presidential election was held on July 5, 2004. Yudhoyono and Kalla won the most votes, but not enough to win outright. A second round of elections was needed. In the second round, Yudhoyono and Kalla won with 60.1% of the votes on September 20, 2004.
First Term as Vice President (2004-2009)
Even though Yudhoyono won the presidency, his party was not very strong in the parliament (DPR). Golkar and PDI-P, who were now in opposition, had more power.
In December 2004, Golkar held a National Congress. Yudhoyono and Kalla initially supported Agung Laksono to become Golkar Chairman. Later, they supported Surya Paloh. Finally, Yudhoyono allowed Kalla to run for the Golkar Chairmanship himself. On December 19, 2004, Kalla was elected as the new Chairman of Golkar.
Kalla's new role as Golkar Chairman meant he had a lot of influence. There were times when it seemed like there was a friendly competition between Kalla and President Yudhoyono. For example, after the Indian Ocean tsunami, Kalla quickly started work on helping Aceh. Yudhoyono later clarified that he had given Kalla the authority to do so.

Another time, in September 2005, when Yudhoyono was at a UN meeting in New York, he held video conferences to check on things in Jakarta. Some people thought this showed he didn't fully trust Kalla. However, Kalla continued to focus on his duties.
Presidential Candidacy in 2009
In 2009, Kalla ran for president in the Indonesian presidential election. His running mate was Wiranto. They finished third in the election.
Second Term as Vice President (2014-2019)
On May 19, 2014, Joko Widodo, the presidential candidate for the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP), announced that Jusuf Kalla would be his vice-presidential running mate. They won the election, and Kalla began his second term as vice president.
During his second term, Kalla discussed environmental issues, such as the haze caused by forest fires. He also expressed views on social values in Indonesia.

Personal Life

Jusuf Kalla is married to Mufidah Miad Saad. They have five children: Muchlisa, Muswira, Imelda, Solichin, and Chaerani.
After his time as vice president, Kalla has continued to be involved in many community activities. On December 22, 2009, he was elected chairman of the Indonesian Red Cross Society (PMI). Kalla said that under his leadership, the PMI would build up its blood bank. This would help prepare for increased demand for blood from hospital patients and victims of natural disasters.
He also has an advanced amateur radio license.
