Mac n' Cheetos are a fun snack that combines two popular foods: macaroni and cheese and Cheetos. They are deep-fried bites of macaroni and cheese, shaped and coated to look like Cheetos.
This snack was first sold at Burger King in June 2016 for a short time. Each order usually came with five pieces and a side of ranch dressing. Now, you can find frozen Mac n' Cheetos in many grocery stores across the United States.
Many people have noticed that Mac n' Cheetos are part of a bigger trend. Fast food places are often mixing their foods with well-known snack brands. This also shows how different food companies sometimes work together.

What Are Mac n' Cheetos?
Mac n' Cheetos are crunchy, deep-fried bites of macaroni and cheese. They are made to look and taste like the popular Cheetos cheese curls. The outside is crispy and has the cheesy flavor and bright orange color of Cheetos.
Alex Macedo, who was the president of Burger King, called this snack a "triple threat." This is because it brings together Burger King, Cheetos, and macaroni and cheese all in one item.
The Name: Mac n' Cheetos
The name "Mac n' Cheetos" is a portmanteau. This means it's a word made by blending parts of two other words. In this case, it blends "mac n' cheese" and "Cheetos."
Different Flavors
There are two main types of Mac n' Cheetos that people know about:
- "Creamy Cheddar"
- "Flamin' Hot" (a spicier version)
The Story of Mac n' Cheetos
Fried macaroni and cheese was not a new idea before Mac n' Cheetos came out. Other restaurants like The Cheesecake Factory and Wayback Burgers had sold similar items before.
Working with Snack Brands
Other fast food chains have also teamed up with snack companies. For example, Taco Bell introduced the Doritos Locos Taco in 2012. This taco had a shell made from a Doritos chip. They later made different flavors like Cool Ranch and Fiery Doritos.
In 2015, Burger King started working with PepsiCo's Frito-Lay. Frito-Lay is the company that makes Cheetos, Doritos, and Ruffles chips.
When They First Appeared
On June 22, 2016, Burger King announced that Mac n' Cheetos would be sold soon. They first tested the product in restaurants in Southern California. Then, on June 27, 2016, Mac n' Cheetos were released across the entire United States.
Burger King's president, Alex Macedo, said they were "partnering up with one of Americans’ favorite brands." He also mentioned that it was "quite unique."
Later, Burger King also offered Cheeto Chicken Fries. These were based on their regular BK Chicken Fries.
Returning to the Menu
On May 18, 2017, Burger King brought Mac n' Cheetos back to its menu for a limited time. At this time, Frito-Lay also introduced the "Flamin' Hot Mac n' Cheetos." This spicier version was based on the popular Flamin' Hot Cheetos.
Because fans loved the limited-time releases at Burger King, Frito-Lay decided to sell frozen Mac n' Cheetos in grocery stores. This way, people could enjoy them at home anytime.
How Much Do They Cost?
When Mac n' Cheetos first came out at Burger King, an order of five pieces usually cost about $2.50.
When the snack was brought back in October 2016 at Sheetz convenience stores, it was priced at $2.99. However, the price could be different depending on the location. For example, in Altoona, Pennsylvania, it cost $3.49.
In May 2017, when Mac n' Cheetos returned to Burger King, the price was $2.69.
Advertising the Snack
Burger King described Mac n' Cheetos as a "dangerously cheesy re-imagination." In May 2017, a press release called them the "cheesiest, most amplified version of mac n’ cheese imaginable."
In June 2016, a TV commercial came out that showed Chester Cheetah, the Cheetos mascot, opening a box of Mac n' Cheetos.
In May 2017, a new music video was released to promote the snack. It starred The Burger King mascot and Chester Cheetah dancing. The video used a new version of the song "Return of the Mack" by Mark Morrison, called "Return of the Mac n' Cheetos."
