The Famous Speed Trap Law
For many years, Macks Creek was known for having a very strict speed trap. A speed trap is a place where police strictly enforce speed limits to catch drivers and give out many tickets. Along US 54, the speed limit in Macks Creek was 45 mph (72 km/h). However, outside the town, the speed limit was 55 mph (89 km/h). This difference often caught drivers by surprise.
This practice ended in 1995 when the state of Missouri passed a new law. This law stopped cities and towns from getting more than 45% of their total money from speeding tickets. Before this law, Macks Creek was reportedly getting about 85% of its money from these tickets. After the law was passed, the police department and the mayor of Macks Creek resigned.
In 2022, a magazine called Reason reported on this situation. They said that if a small town has a law named after it, it's usually for a bad reason. Macks Creek was an "obnoxious speed trap" that led to the "Macks Creek Law" in 1995. This law helped make sure towns didn't rely too much on speeding tickets for their income.
