Maddington is a suburb located about 20 kilometres (12 miles) southeast of the city centre of Perth. Perth is the capital of Western Australia. Maddington is part of the City of Gosnells local government area.
Maddington is a busy area with different types of land use. It has major residential (homes), retail (shops), and industrial (factories and businesses) sections. You can also find some semi-rural areas, which are a mix of country and city.
Unlike many nearby suburbs, Maddington still has several vineyards and orchards. These remind us of a time when the area was mostly used for farming. Maddington also has its own train station. Like many other places, it is planning for new developments around its transport hubs.

Maddington's Past
In the 1800s, a wealthy early settler named John Randall Phillips owned the land that is now Maddington. He named his property "Maddington Park" after a town in England.
About 70 years later, after the gold rush caused Perth's population to grow quickly, Maddington Park was divided into smaller pieces of land. This area became known simply as "Maddington." It was used for many types of farming, including market gardens, raising poultry (chickens), and orchards (fruit farms).
In the 1950s and 1960s, Maddington and the areas around it were further divided. They were then developed into the residential suburbs we see today.
From Race Course to Industry
During the 1960s, the Canning Park race course, which was in Maddington, was no longer used. An English property developer bought this land. He turned it into an industrial estate, which is an area with many light industrial businesses. You can still see these businesses along Albany Highway and the train line today.
Maddington was also chosen as the site for one of 24 new Australian Technical Colleges. These colleges were proposed by the Australian government in 2005.
Maddington Central Shopping
Maddington Central is a large shopping centre in the suburb. It used to be known as Centro Maddington and Maddington Metro. The centre was built in two stages, from the early 1980s to 1992.
Some of the main stores you can find there include Coles, Woolworths, Kmart, and Best & Less. Other shops include banks like Bankwest, ANZ, and NAB. There are also Red Dot stores, a Telstra shop, many small shops in the food court, and the Maddington post office.
Maddington Central is located about 20 kilometres from the Perth central business district. It sits between Olga Road, Burslem Drive, and Attfield Street in Maddington. You can easily get there by public transport.
